Weather of Sri Lanka

The weather of Sri Lanka is typically tropical. And due to its location between 6 and 10 degrees north of equator, average temperature in Sri Lanka fluctuates between 27 degree and 29 degree. But as we move towards higher altitudes of nearly 2000m, temperature lower down to 16 degree Celsius. One can find this drop in temperature mostly in Central Mountain Region of the country.

Even Sri Lanka is blessed with four rainy periods , such as from May to September, it’s the time of Southwest Monsoon Rain, Inter-monsoon showers come in October and November, northeast monsoon rains from December till February. Again inter-monsoon rain in March and April.

The South-west Monsoon brings rain mainly to western, southern and central regions of the island whereas North-east Monsoon brings rain mainly in the northern and eastern regions in December and January. As for humidity it is still 90 % at night and 70 % during the day time. Humidity is typically higher in the southwest and mountainous areas and depends on the seasonal patterns of rainfall.

Bright, sunny, warm days are the rule and are common even during the height of the monsoon season. This means Sri Lanka has no off season for travel and tourism.
